Marriage Equality
The Marriage Equality Referendum Ireland was held in May 2015
The Humanist Association of Ireland was absolutely delighted that Ireland said YES to same sex marriage in 2015. It was a campaign we fully supported and became involved in.
We have long championed full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Ireland, and were delighted that the Irish people strongly endorsed the rights of couples to marry without distinction as to their sex. It was particularly inspiring that this change came about by popular vote, but we are mindful that many other countries continue to persecute and oppress LGBT people. We hope that the resounding endorsement of equality and justice for the LGBT community in Ireland inspires other countries and will be seen as a historic milestone towards equality for LGBT people throughout the world.
We also look forward to more changes in Irish society that support equality, compassion and reason.
