Concerns were raised by Humanists UK and My Death, My Decision about the number of amendments that were being tabled as the UK’s Terminally Ill Adults Bill was debated at the first sitting of the committee stage, with claims that the volume of amendments was a deliberate delay tactic and an attempt to derail the bill entirely.
Almost 600 of the amendments came from just seven people, with one amendment from Baroness Coffey proposing that only people who had not left the country in the previous twelve months should have been eligible for voluntary assisted dying, effectively banning anyone who had been on a holiday or trip from the service.
According to Louise Shackelton, who accompanied her husband to Switzerland to avail of assisted dying care, this level of opposition “isn’t scrutiny, it’s sabotage.” She highlighted that both the public and the House of Commons supported this bill and added “These tactics are an insult to the democratic process and to every family that has lived through this pain.”
