Peru has celebrated its first ever humanist wedding, marking a milestone for non-religious life ceremonies in the country.
The ceremony took place in Lima on 8 November 2025 and united Peruvian singer-songwriter Paola Veliz and Raúl Torres, director of the Secular Humanist Society of Peru.
The landmark wedding focused on personal autonomy, ethical commitment, and mutual respect. The couple exchanged personalised vows and took part in a symbolic coloured sand ritual representing joining together in unity without the loss of individuality.
Humanist weddings are collaboratively created with couples, offering a meaningful alternative to religious ceremonies or purely administrative civil marriages. While common in many parts of Europe and North America, secular ceremonies are new to Peru, where millions identify as non-religious.
Humanist organisers said the event opens the door to greater cultural recognition of non-believers, arguing that a plural democracy must make space for diverse ways of celebrating love and commitment.
