Humanists International has coordinated a global civil society response to a recent US Executive Order withdrawing the United States from dozens of international organisations, treaties, and conventions.
An open letter led by Humanists International brought together more than 60 organisations worldwide, including human rights groups, democracy advocates, and humanitarian networks, collectively representing hundreds of civil society bodies. The signatories warned that disengaging from multilateral institutions undermines the international human rights system and weakens global cooperation at a time of growing geopolitical tension.
The letter stressed that global challenges cannot be addressed through isolation, arguing that withdrawal reduces opportunities for cooperation, accountability, and shared problem-solving. It also raised concerns about hostile rhetoric towards civil society and international NGOs, warning that it risks endangering human rights defenders and empowering authoritarian actors.
