The HAI were delighted to be invited and to attend a meeting with An Taoiseach, Micheal Martin TD, and with Faith and Non-Confessional Groups at the department of the Taoiseach, on Monday 1 September.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of faith groups, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Baha’i, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, the Religious Society of Friends in Ireland, the Greek Orthodox Church and others.

The format of the meeting was to exchange ideas on an agenda and working methods for a structured dialogue. The Taoiseach led a discussion on topics including social cohesion, reconciliation, and proposals for an open, transparent, and regular engagement with Faith and Non-Confessional Groups. It was agreed that work would now progress on developing an agreed format and schedule for this dialogue.

Speaking after the meeting the Taoiseach said:

“I very much welcome the constructive and engaged discussion we had this morning. In today’s busy world, with many competing technologies and platforms, it is vital that we create and protect spaces that allow for open, respectful, and dignified debate and discussion on issues of mutual interest and concern. We will work to progress this meaningful engagement over the coming weeks and months.”

HAI Operations Manager, Niamh Clowry echoed the sentiments of the Taoiseach and said:

“We echo the sentiments of the Taoiseach that we must all work together to create and protect spaces that allow for open, respectful, and dignified debate and discussion on issues of mutual interest and concern. We look forward to ensuring humanism continues to have a voice at the table”.
