Professor Debbie Ging: Digital Hate and Incel Culture

Last month’s fascinating talk with Professor Debbie Ging from DCU explored online hate and incel ideologies. While humanism champions empathy, equality, and reason, these online spaces often thrive on anger, exclusion, and dehumanisation, making Debbie’s work especially applicable to understanding how humanist values can present a remedy to these divisions. The talk was both challenging and enlightening.

About the Speaker
Debbie Ging is a Professor of Digital Media and Gender in the School of Communications at DCU. Her teaching and research focus on gender, sexuality, and digital media, with particular emphasis on digital hate, online anti-feminist men’s rights movements, the incel subculture, and the radicalisation of boys and men into male supremacist ideologies.

Debbie serves as Ireland Corresponding Editor for Men and Masculinities and sits on the Editorial Board of New Media & Society. She also investigates how young people experience gender-based and sexual abuse online, as well as educational strategies to address these issues. She is affiliated with the National Anti-Bullying Research and Resource Centre and the Institute for Future Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo).
