Do you have rights to your body (bodily autonomy)?

Ask yourself three questions. 1. Can you say no to sex? 2. Can you decide whether or not to use birth control? 3. Can you decide over your own healthcare? If you can answer yes to all three questions you are considered to have bodily autonomy, as defined by the UN.

This form of autonomy, amongst others, is an important part of the Humanist philosophy. The United Nations sexual health and reproductive health agency has found that 45% of women in this world do not have the right to their own body.

Although only focusing on 57 countries, the report nevertheless acknowledged the need to fight for equal rights for all. The European Humanist Federation advocates for bodily autonomy in Europe, but wants to reach beyond its borders. If you would like to read the report itself you can do so by following this link.
