Humanist weddings continue to grow in popularity in Ireland, according to newly released figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The latest marriage statistics show that 1,382 couples chose a Humanist ceremony in 2025, accounting for almost 7% of all marriages nationwide. Humanist weddings were more common than ceremonies conducted by several traditional religious denominations combined, including Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, and Methodist weddings.

The figures reflect a continuing shift towards secular and personalised ceremonies. Civil ceremonies remained the most popular type of wedding overall, while Roman Catholic ceremonies continued their long-term decline.

Humanist ceremonies have nearly doubled over the past decade, rising from just over 700 weddings in 2015 to more than 1,300 this year. The growth highlights changing attitudes towards marriage in modern Ireland, with many couples seeking non-religious ceremonies that focus on personal values, storytelling and individuality.

The CSO data also showed that Humanist ceremonies were chosen by a notable number of same-sex couples, representing almost 12% of all same-sex marriages in 2025.

Ireland remains one of the few countries where Humanist marriages have full legal recognition.
