SUMMER SCHOOL 2019

This year’s summer school with take place at the Bridge House Hotel in Tullamore on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of September. Tickets can be booked here.

This is a two-day theme-based event with guest speakers, discussions, and plenty of socialising and entertainment. It’s great fun, as well as being educational. This will be our first year away from Carlingford, the event’s traditional home. Tullamore is a very pretty town in the centre of Ireland with excellent transport links and loads of options for food and entertainment. However we recommend booking accommodation as soon as possible.

This year the theme is Humanism and the New Ireland. The event will cover a wide range of topics related to this theme including church state relations, education, diversity and inclusion, and environmental and climate justice. There will also be some cultural and entertainment-based additions to the programme compared to previous years, and a little something to help your mental health!

We have already confirmed most of the speakers, and will make a formal announcement with the full programme later this month. Speakers over the weekend will include Green Party leader Eamon Ryan TD; Religious Affairs correspondent Patsy McGarry of the Irish Times; journalist and author of the excellent Madam Politician Martina Fitzgerald; poet Sarah Clancy, Professor Colin Harvey, who is Professor of Human Rights Law at Queens University in Belfast; USI President Síona Cahill; Liam Herrick, Executive Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties; Kellie O’Dowd of the Alliance for Choice in Northern Ireland; and Catriona Twomey, whose wonderful contribution many of you will remember from the Sunday Meeting in Cork earlier this year.

SO GET THAT ACCOMMODATION BOOKED! And don’t forget there’ll be a Saturday night meal for attendees.

We are also looking at including some events for children of various ages over the weekend but first we need be check on what kind of interest there would be in availing of this. If people are interested in bringing their children to the Summer School and have them partake in some activities please could you email Roseanne at [email protected].
